What is DTF (direct to film)?

If you are looking for a printing technology with flawless final designs that can be used on most fabric types with an exact depiction of the image, DTF is the answer.

DTF stands for Direct to Film, which is a printing technology used to transfer designs onto fabric with precise image reproduction. In DTF printing, the design is first printed onto a special film using a printer, and then the film is placed onto the fabric and heat-pressed, which transfers the design onto the fabric.

DTF printing is known for its ability to produce high-quality, full-color designs that can be applied to a variety of fabric types, including cotton, polyester, and blends. Additionally, DTF printing allows for detailed designs with intricate patterns and fine lines to be accurately reproduced on the fabric.

Compared to other printing methods like screen printing, DTF is more cost-effective for small to medium-sized runs, as it does not require expensive setup costs. Furthermore, DTF printing is more eco-friendly than traditional methods as it uses less water and generates less waste.

Direct to Film or DTF is a process that transfers prints onto fabric or other substrates using a heat-press.  Unlike the DTG method, which only works on cotton fabrics or sublimation which only works on polyester, the DTF method can work on cotton, polyester, cotton/poly blends and many other fabrics with no pre treatment.

The application process is quite simple and only requires a heat press, and of course a shirt (or fabric substrate of some sort).  We recommend a temperature of 300-310 F for cotton and cotton/poly blends.

  1. You'll want to prepress the shirt for 5 seconds to remove wrinkles
  2.  Align your transfer into the proper position on your substrate and press for about 10 seconds.  If a portion of the design is not adhering properly, just press again for another 5-10 seconds.  Note: There are a couple different types of film that can be used, either cold peel or warn peel.  We use a warm peel.
  3. Next rub the surface of the film and then peel away the film.
  4. Once the film is removed, press the shirt one more time for 5 seconds which is the final curing step.  Note: We recommend covering the design with either a sheet of parchment paper which will give your design a matte look or a Teflon sheet which will give your design a little more sheen.  Just depends on your preference.
  5. In summary, just remember 5-10-5 (seconds) at 300 degrees.

We think you will love the flexibility of these transfers because you are no longer limited to a specific type of fabric or even specific colors.
